Historic Grant Funding Strengthens Preservation Efforts at Frederick Douglass Memorial Park
We are delighted to announce that the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) has awarded a $35,000 grant to Frederick Douglass Memorial Park, Inc. for roof replacement work on its historic chapel building. New York City Government
Why This Matters
The park was founded in 1935 and is the only non-sectarian cemetery in New York City created by and for the Black community during a time when racial discrimination barred many from other burial sites. New York City Government
With this grant, we affirm the importance of preserving not just physical structures, but the rich cultural and historical legacy of the African-American community and its contributions to Staten Island and New York City.
What the Grant Will Support
The funding will cover critical roof replacement work for the chapel building, which is a designated individual landmark. New York City Government
Beyond covering the cost, LPC will also provide technical assistance to ensure the restoration is undertaken with appropriate preservation standards. New York City Government
This work will help safeguard the building from weather and environmental damage, ensuring the site can continue to serve visitors, families, and the wider community for generations to come.
Our Gratitude and Next Steps
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the LPC and the many supporters of Frederick Douglass Memorial Park for their commitment to historic preservation. As Board Secretary Lynn Cuffee noted:
“We are deeply grateful to the LPC Historic Preservation Grant Program for supporting the restoration of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Park chapel roof. This investment ensures the protection of a landmark that honors African American history and community heritage for generations to come.” New York City Government
In the coming weeks we will share updates on the project timeline, the contractor selection process, and opportunities for viewing the restoration in progress. We look forward to welcoming you to see the strengthened chapel and to continue our mission of honoring lives, history, and memory in this sacred space.
