Historic Designation Underway for Frederick Douglass Memorial Park

We are pleased to report that the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) has advanced the proposed individual landmark designation for Frederick Douglass Memorial Park at 3201 Amboy Road in Staten Island. According to the New York Landmarks Conservancy statement delivered on May 21 2024, the designation reflects both the site’s historic and design significance. New York Landmarks Conservancy

The Chapel House, 1961

Originally established in 1935 to serve African-Americans during a time of de facto segregation, the Park has been the final resting place for an estimated 60,000 interments, including community leaders, entertainers and participants in major historical events. New York Landmarks Conservancy
The park’s landscape—with its curved paths, green setting, monuments, and a memorial to Frederick Douglass dedicated in 1961—provides a serene oasis within the surrounding Staten Island neighborhood. New York Landmarks Conservancy

The Conservancy highlights past support for the site: an $11,000 emergency grant in 2020 for roof replacement and a $4,000 technical assistance grant in 2023 to fund a condition assessment. New York Landmarks Conservancy

This landmark designation would formally recognize FDMP’s vital role in African-American history in New York City and safeguard its heritage for future generations. We applaud the initiative and look forward to the official designation vote.
