Chapel House Roof Restoration Underway

Frederick Douglass Memorial Park is pleased to share that critical repairs to the Chapel House roof are now underway as part of our ongoing preservation efforts following our 2024 NYC Landmark designation by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

This project includes the safe and regulated remediation of asbestos roofing materials, an essential step in protecting both the structural integrity of the Chapel House and the health of our community.

Project Overview

The work is being conducted by a certified asbestos abatement team in full compliance with state and city regulations and includes:

Stage 1: Filing & Compliance
All required filings and notifications are being completed in accordance with Department of Labor asbestos regulations.

Stage 2: Site Preparation
The site is secured with proper containment, including decontamination and designated waste areas. Safety measures include fencing, posted notifications, and fully equipped licensed workers onsite.

Stage 3: Removal & Disposal
Asbestos-containing materials (ACM) are carefully removed under controlled conditions using industry-standard wet methods. All materials are handled and disposed of by certified professionals using approved containment procedures.

Stage 4: Cleanup & Clearance
All waste is double-bagged, labeled, and removed to designated containers. Air monitoring and visual inspections will be conducted to ensure the site meets clearance standards before dismantling containment areas.

The project is expected to be completed within approximately 4–5 working days, weather and conditions permitting.
